Aileen 'Ike' Melbostad

Melbostad, Aileen "Ike" Aileen died peacefully on April 24, 2016 in St. Paul, Minnesota at age 96. She was born September 8, 1919 in Hines, MN to Eva & Ben Kuefler. The family moved to Forest Lake, MN, when her father became superintendent of schools there in 1930. In high school the senior class prophecy said "Ike" would be Ginger Rogers's successor, as she excelled in gymnastics/tumbling and tap dancing. After graduation Aileen continued her education at St. Cloud Teachers College and Minneapolis Business College where she was enrolled in business classes. She married her high school sweetheart in 1940. Merton enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in WWII as a B29 navigator, bombadier in the Pacific, stationed in Saipan. They had two daughters, Karen and Sue. Once they were teenagers, Aileen worked part time, first at the First Bank of Southdale and then at American Hardware Mutual where she was a file clerk and a receptionist for many years. She was a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and after Merton's death she remained in Edina for a number of years, then moving back to St. Paul near where she, Merton and family first lived. Aileen was preceded in death by Merton, parents Eva and Ben Kuefler, and her sister Velma Lehto. She is survived by her sister Dolores Barker (Kuefler), brother Harry Kuefler, daughters, Karen Riesett (Bob), and Sue Erickson (Steve), grandchildren, Joel Shifflet (Karen), Jennifer Shifflet (Karen), Troy Erickson (Sue), Stephanie Erickson (Sue), great-grandchildren, Logan Hyrkas (Stephanie), Gavin Hyrkas (Stephanie), and Zachary Nielson (Troy). The family thanks the wonderful staff & caregivers of Lyngblomsten Apartments and Care Center in St. Paul. Memorials to Lyngblomsten, 1415 Almond Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55108. Per Aileen's request a private interment will be held at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.
