Daniel Paul Johnson

Johnson, Daniel Paul age 51, of Chanhassen, MN passed away suddenly on February 7, 2016. Preceded in death by mother Shirley and father-in-law Bob. Survived by loving wife Mary, sons Nick and Karl, father Paul, brothers David (Jill) and Mark (Laura), mother-in-law Frances Nicklason, brothers-in-law Brian (Jeanne) and Paul, nieces Kayla (Dylan), Karin and Sophie, and nephews Connor, Charlie, Jacob, and Sam. He will be missed dearly by many other extended family members and friends from all walks of life. Dan graduated from Southwest High School in 1982, and St. Olaf College in 1986. After graduating college Dan worked briefly in Washington, D.C. before returning to Minnesota in 1989. He has had a long and successful career in Insurance Sales and Agency Management in the Twin Cities, most recently as a partner in the Multi-lines Insurance agency RJR Insurance of Minnetonka. He met the love of his life, Mary, in 1990 when they were both working at Northstar Resource Group in Minneapolis. Dan and Mary have had an amazing life together, raising two strong and loving sons and traveling extensively with their family and friends. Residents of Chanhassen since 1998, he and Mary have made many close friends together as a family. Nick and Karl were the center of their life together. Their many activities, including school and sports and cabin and travel, allowed Dan to participate significantly in their lives. Dan coached Nick in both hockey and baseball, and Karl in baseball for many years. He also unselfishly served as a Board Member of the Chaska-Chanhassen Youth Hockey Association. Helping and watching them grow up into the amazing young men they are today was always Dan's priority. Playing, coaching, spectating, and complaining about sports teams and referees was his personal passion and Music was "his thing". An avid golfer, Dan stood out at both Southwest and St. Olaf College and in his 20's as a competitive player, including qualifying and playing in two Minnesota Amateur Championships. Legendary rock bands and memorable concerts form much of his youthful story, and even last summer he sojourned to Red Rocks with the St. Olaf Crew to revisit Steely Dan and Elvis Costello. According to Dan, he had seen every concert ever performed (that mattered). The world was Dan's stage. His ability to light up a room, a group, the workplace, and his family with his story telling and his amazing energy was contagious in any setting. He had the ability to lighten up any situation, bring an incredible positive vibe, and allow everyone there to smile and forget about anything else. The years ahead will pass with many, many recollections of Dan's presence, warmth, and impact on so many people. Visitation and Memorial Service will be held Monday, February 15, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church - 4100 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis - with a Memorial Service and Luncheon at 11 am with visitation immediately before at 10 am.
