Fenderson, Douglas A., Ph.D. Professor Emeritus, Department of Family Practice and Community Health, University of Minnesota Medical School, passed away on February 10, 2019 at the age of 90. He was born January 28, 1929 in Streeter, North Dakota, but lived most of his life in the Twin Cities. Doug provided leadership for two federal agencies. He was Director of National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the Senate. Doug served for nine years as Director of Continuing Medical Education at the U of M. During this time he established the Bush Clinical Fellows Program to assist mid-career rural physicians to better meet the needs of their local communities. He concluded his professional career as Professor in the U of M Department of Family Practice and Community Health. He was a talented trumpet player, avid reader, private pilot, and author of 66 publications. Douglas Fenderson is survived by his wife and best friend, Joyce; four children, Bruce (Faith), Philadelphia; Allen (Ann), Arden Hills; Susan (Mark Hammar), Dassel; Beth (Kurt Borlaug), Forest Lake; eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and brother, David. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and John; and grandson Keith.
