William John 'Bill' Cosgriff

Cosgriff, William John "Bill" March 3, 1941-January 3, 2018 Passed away from compli-cations of Parkinson's disease. Preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Alexander Cosgriff; sisters-in-law, Kathy Flynn and Pat Dorle; nephews, Vince and Jake Flynn. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maureen (née Dorle); son, John (Theresa); grandchildren Parker and Lucy Cosgriff; cousins, Joan Johnson, John and Bob Ryan, Katie McAvoy, John, William and Tim Rowan and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was a true native son of St. Paul. His friendships began at St. Luke's grade school and continued at Cretin High School, the University of St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota Law School. Bill was considered a leader by his contemporaries, elected president of the senior class of 1959 at Cretin High School and awarded the highest honor of Cadet Colonel. At St. Thomas, Bill continued as a leader, being chosen as president of the Tiger Club and selected as "Mr. Tommy" of the class of 1963. Bill was a member of the Law School Class of 1966, graduating cum laude. Following law school, Bill entered the Navy as a JAG officer and served from 1966-1969, including one year in Danang, Vietnam assigned to the Commanding General. Bill met Maureen when they were in high school. Their friendship continued, and they kept in touch through letters and occasional visits while she was away teaching French. They married in 1970. Bill practiced law at Doherty, Rumble and Butler from 1969-1999 and then practiced at Briggs and Morgan. From the very beginning of his law career, Bill was involved in the civic life of St. Paul. Through the years he held leadership positions in many non-profit organizations and was given numerous awards. He and Maureen enjoyed travel including meals and trips with their friends in the St. Paul Gourmet Club. His other interests were photo-graphy, reading and gardening. Bill was always willing to help those who sought his wise counsel and support. He truly cared for and was beloved by his family, friends and the greater community. The family would like to thank the Sholom Home East Bentson Assisted Living Staff, Baywood Home Care and Allina Hospice. Memorials to Common Bond Communities, Cretin-Derham Hall High School, Friends of the St. Paul Public Library, the University of St. Thomas or donor's choice. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church, Summit at Lexington, St. Paul. Visitation one hour prior to service. Luncheon to follow in Mendota Heights.
