Craig Walter Sandell Howe, MD

Howe, Craig Walter Sandell, MD of White Bear Lake, age 69, died January 5, following a stroke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Essie Howe. He is survived by his wife, Susan, daughter and son-in-law, Elsbeth Howe, JD and Jason Ross, DDS, grandchildren, Annie, John and Sam, mother-in-law Shirley Hansen, and other family and friends. Craig grew up in Robbinsdale and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1969. He pursued a PhD. at the University of Cambridge, England and graduated from Cornell University Medical College in 1978. He did his residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis and completed a fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard University, Boston, MA. He was an assistant professor at the University of Iowa Medical School, and then an associate professor and the Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA. Craig served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Marrow Donor Program (Be The Match) between 1992-1999 and then returned to private oncology practice with Minnesota Oncology until retirement. Craig enjoyed his lake house, golf, Minnesota sports, especially the Twins, television, his two departed dogs, good scotch, travel with his wife, books, plays, attending his grandchildren's activities, and challenging them with trivia questions. His passion was being a physician and he was wholly dedicated to caring for patients. As one patient wrote to him, "There were many times I felt you went above and beyond, and there are no words to express my gratitude toward you. You are truly one of the great ones."
