Wallace, Wayne D. (SGM - US Army/ MNARNG-Retired) age 87 of Anoka/Coon Rapids, born September 13, 1930 in Minneapolis, MN. Passed away peacefully sur- rounded by family on Jan uary 19, 2018. Preceded in death by wife, Patricia and son, Brian; parents Leroy and Ethel (Webert) Wallace, brothers Charles and Harry and sister Betty Schinkel. Wayne is survived by daughter, Jean (Gary) Clauer, sons Chuck and Terry Wallace, granddaughter Angie (Jason) Ploof, grandson Jonathon Wallace, 2 great grandsons Max and Jack Ploof; brothers David (Janice) and William and sister Elaine Bain. Wayne graduated from Anoka High School in 1949 and was awarded eight athletic letters. Wayne was part of a small group of unique athletes who lettered in five different sports (Baseball, Basketball, Football, Track and Field (Co-Capt.) and Wrestling. He earned a scholarship at Bemidji State College in football. During his first football season, he was injured and could no longer play. He left school and a short time later he deployed to Korea. After a tour of duty in the US Army in the Korean War, he was hired as a technician with the Minnesota Army National Guard, 47th Division Artillery, where he served for 40 years achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. He was memorialized into the Hall of Fame as service member of the Minnesota National Guard at Camp Ripley in September 1992. Wayne was a lifetime member (65 years) of the Anoka American Legion Post 102 where he served as Commander and Post Adjutant for 37 years. He was an integral part of the Anoka Memorial Day observance ceremonies for numerous years. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Disabled Veterans (DAV). He loved watching all sports, but especially his Minnesota sports teams. Wayne loved his family and friends as much as they deeply loved him. Visitation will be held 4-7 PM Friday, January 26, 2018 at Gearhart Funeral Home 552 East River Road in Anoka and again one hour prior to the funeral services to be held at 2 PM Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church 1601 S. 4th Ave Anoka, MN. Burial in Forest Hills Cemetery in Anoka. In lieu of flowers, Wayne has requested that donations to be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project of MN and Disabled Veterans (DAV).
