Challman, Jerome Alan "Jerry" Age 76, of Duluth, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Monday, January 8, 2018. Born Feb. 19, 1941 Son of Robert and Jean Challman. Graduated Southwest High School in Minneapolis, Macalester College 1965. He was All-City Back Stroke Champion while at Southwest, and All American Swimmer at Macalester, as well as a Lifequard at Lake Calhoun. Jerry spent 2 years in the Philippines, and 1 year in Chile with the Peace Corps, he moved to Duluth, obtained his MSSW from U of M Duluth, then worked for Duluth ISD 709 as a School Social Worker. Jerry was very involved in the Duluth activist's scene. He was past president of MN School Social Workers Assoc, current Secretary of MN Citizens Federation and the current President of the Greater MN Health Care Coalition. He was a past board member of Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth and a founder of their Buddhist Mediation group, member of the Whole Foods Co-op of Duluth, and active among many other groups and charities. Jerry lived for river rafting, sailing, woodworking, and social and political causes. He could often be found researching, reading or debating his passions. Survived by M. Beverly Berntson (wife of 33 years); sister Martha Mayer; step-daughter Amy Bacigalupo (Paul Wymar); step-sons Christopher Bacigalupo (Patrice Bradley), Dominic Bacigalupo (Patricia), Martin Bacigalupo (Danelle); Grandchildren Gino, Aurora, Louis, Gabriella, Lydia, Lynsey, and Hunter; Brother-in law Tom Berntson (Clara Krejsa), nieces Jacqueline Challman, J.J. Clementson (Michael), Jacque Challman; great nephew Oscar; great niece Elouise; and furry baby Carmelita. Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3rd, gathering 10:00 service 11:00, at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, 835 W. College St, Duluth, MN 55811.
