Nearly three dozen Minnesota Republicans sent North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory a letter this week expressing support for his state's controversial transgender bathroom law.

The letter comes on the heels of a decision by Gov. Mark Dayton to ban any non-essential travel to North Carolina, which recently enacted a law regulating the use of bathrooms by transgender individuals.

North Carolina's law has drawn strident criticism nationally, as well as support by conservatives who say they are only standing up for privacy rights.

In Minnesota, House Republicans introduced a similar bill that would require individuals to use restrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms that might their "biological sex."

"As fellow elected officials, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to you for being a courageous voice for common sense in protecting the safety and privacy of the citizens in your state," the letter said. "The recent protests from our state and others in response to North Carolina's private bathroom protection bill are unfortunate," adding that "We hope to implement similar protections Minnesota."

It was signed by state Rep. Abigail Whelan, R-Anoka, and state Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove, along with 22 other House members and 11 others state senators.
