The start: The resort began with the Pine Peach Hotel, which opened in 1929. It's now a historic wing of the Madden Inn and Golf Club and in the National Trust Historic Hotels of America.

The present: Sprawling across more than 1,000 acres mostly on the Pine Beach Peninsula, Madden's accommodates up to 600 guests a week late spring through fall.

Lodging: Historic Madden Lodge and cabins, Colonial Hall, and Sunrise Villas on Steamboat Bay, Wilson Bay units and newly built Voyageur rooms plus cabins on Wilson Bay, golf villas and Madden Inn and Golf Club overlooking Pine Beach East golf course.

Lake activities: Water-ski and wakeboard lessons, pontoon boat rides and fishing, two indoor pools and one outdoor pool, beach toys, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

Recreation: Kids' Adventure Cove, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis, croquet, lawn bowling, volleyball, horseshoes and trapshooting.

Golf: Madden's opened the state's first 18-hole course in 1926 and now has 63 holes that include the Classic, Pine Beach East (the state's first 18-hole course), Pine Beach West and the Social Nine, which offers a short game and good course for families.

Dining: The Restaurant at Madden Inn, Lobby Café, the Dining Room at Madden Lodge, the Classic Grill, Parfecto Pizza, Chrissy's Ice Cream and Madden Bros. Market.
