Breck Head of School Edward Kim is stepping down from the helm of the Golden Valley private school at the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

The upcoming school year is his tenth year at Breck School and his 31st year in education, according to a Tuesday message from Kim to the school community.

"One year from now, I will take with me treasured memories and valuable experiences," Kim said. "Until then, I will continue to work with passion and dedication for the benefit of our beloved school."

The school is starting a national search for its new Head of School and plans to have someone for the 2017-2018 school year, according to a message to the school from Bishop Brian Prior of the Episcopal Church of Minnesota, who is chair of the Breck Board of Trustees. The search will include community involvement in coming months, he said.

Kim has demonstrated "his passion lives in education where he focuses on caring for each student and his or her individual needs," Prior said in a follow-up note to Kim's announcement.

"We are grateful for the work and accomplishments he has achieved during his tenure," Prior said in the message.

While Head of School, Kim oversaw the building of a new Upper School facility and the launch of the Melrose Family Center for Servant Leadership and the Peter Clark Center for teaching and learning. Other projects he led included the one-to-one laptop program for students grades 4 through 12 and expansion of Breck's advanced research program, according to the school.

Before starting as Breck Head of School in July 2007, Kim spent 21 years at Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J. There, he held different positions, including assistant headmaster, according to Breck's website.

Breck School is a preschool through grade 12 private school.
