Setting the scene

After coach Mike Zimmer canceled the morning walkthrough, the Vikings made their return to the practice fields at Minnesota State Mankato after Sunday's Hall of Fame Game. It was partly cloudy with the temperatures around 80 degrees as the Vikings practiced in full pads.

Vikings get a scare

It was a pretty uneventful practice until running back Adrian Peterson burst through the line of scrimmage on an inside running play. Peterson collided with a defender and crashed to the ground. He limped to the sideline, and after he re-entered practice for one play, Peterson left the practice fields and did not return. It sounds like he is fine, but there were some tense moments there after he walked off.

Step on up, Jerick

After Peterson left practice, it was second-year back Jerick McKinnon who got the bulk of the first-team work. He was very active as a pass-catcher and also showed off his burst in the running game.

Waynes still feisty

The three penalties Trae Waynes was flagged for on Sunday night didn't lead to any timidness from the rookie cornerback in practice. Backup quarterback Shaun Hill attacked Waynes in one 11-on-11 drill by throwing a deep ball down the right sideline to wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. Waynes stalked Patterson in the trail position before batting the ball out of his hands, knocking Patterson to the ground in the process.

Pruitt keeps on rolling

Rookie tight end MyCole Pruitt, who scored a touchdown against the Steelers, flashed again in practice. Pruitt made a sweet catch over linebacker Josh Kaddu along the right sideline. Later in the afternoon, he got some more action with the first-team offense.

Camp chatter

"The two plays he did, he did good, which is a small sample size. I don't know what Pro Football Focus had on it." — Zimmer taking another jab at PFF while answering a question about nose tackle Linval Joseph.

Injury report

Outside linebacker Anthony Barr (knee) and fullback Zach Line (leg) returned to practice. Sitting out were offensive lineman David Yankey, defensive end Scott Crichton, defensive tackle B.J. DuBose, tight end Brandon Bostick, cornerback Josh Robinson and wide receiver Gavin Lutman.
