Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards wasn't supposed to be in Minnesota this week, but after suffering an apparent injury while training with Team USA in Las Vegas, he will have to return. Wolves coach Chris Finch said Monday that Edwards would be back in the coming days to be "properly assessed."

In a video that circulated on Twitter last week, Edwards was seen limping out of practice and being helped to the team bus. Although the nature of the injury was unclear, a source told the Star Tribune that it was a "sprain" and confirmed it was not Edwards' knee.

Edwards, who turns 20 on Aug. 5, finished second to Charlotte's LaMelo Ball for the NBA Rookie of the Year award after the No. 1 overall pick out of Georgia averaged more than 19 points per game while shooting 41.7% from the floor.

Edwards, along with Wolves teammate Naz Reid, was part of the "select team" helping train Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. The select team will not travel to Japan. Finch said he watched the team practice last week and felt that Reid and Edwards were "two of the best players on the court."

"Unfortunately for Ant, I think if he wouldn't have gotten hurt, I think he had a chance to stick around a little bit longer with the Olympic team," Finch said.

Finch spoke with the media at Maple Grove Middle School, where the Wolves and Lynx Basketball Academy are holding clinics for all skill levels through August.

Nigeria, Okogie 2-0

While Edwards and Reid have been training with Team USA, Wolves guard Josh Okogie will play in Tokyo for the Nigerian national team. On Saturday, Nigeria pulled off an upset in an exhibition game against the U.S. In the 90-87 victory in Las Vegas, Okogie started and had four points, three rebounds and three assists.

"I hope he brings it up all the time and spurs some competitiveness," Finch said of Okogie. "[Nigeria has] a very, very winnable group in the Olympics, so I think it's a team to watch."

Nigeria won again in Las Vegas on Monday, routing Argentina 94-71. Okogie scored 10 points. Leandro Bolmoro, the 6-6 shooting guard whose draft rights are held by the Wolves, led Argentina with 10 points.
