French twist
The audience for "Knife + Heart" is narrow, but I suspect it'll be deep. Director Yann Gonzalez is clearly a big fan of the stylish thriller "Blow Out," and the twisty, French romantic thriller plays out like an homage to that film's director, Brian De Palma (who is often thought of as an Alfred Hitchcock imitator, but whose Hitchcock influences are not present here). Gory and racy, the movie takes place on the set of a gay porno, often blurring the lines between whether we're watching "Knife + Heart" or the movie-within-the-movie. The voyeurism overload peaks in a clever scene when we're peeking at a character in a film who is editing the movie-within-the-movie, in which she's overseeing the antics of characters who are spying on each other.
