OPENING

Andrew Mazarol and Ryan Fontaine: The Reality of Repeatability

Hair & Nails Gallery (2222 ½ E 35th St., Mpls 55407)

Opening Fri, Nov 3 from 7-10 p.m.

https://hairandnailsart.com/current/

Hair & Nails Gallery's new two-person is filled with slick, weird paintings by co-owner Ryan Fontaine and NY-based painter Andrew Mazorol, who used to paint as part of the duo AMTK when he lived in Minneapolis. While Fontaine's mixed media piece "Strap" looks like a layers of obscure materials, from a wooden frame to an accordian and then matched with a strip of black paint, his minimalist use of colors and materials pairs well with the busy patterning of Mazorol's "Man with Dog" (2017), wherein outlines of shadowy characters blend together, playing illusory spacial tricks on the eye. The exhibition includes five paintings.

Open hours: Thurs-Fri 3-6 p.m.; Sat-Sun 1-6 p.m. or by appointment. Ends Dec 3. Free.

Art in the snow: It's truly a Minnesota thing

Walker Art Center, Minnesota Institute of Art, Loring Park

Whether you cried when the first snow fell last week and hid in a small, warm corner of your home, huddled next to a space heater because your furnace wasn't working, or you jubilantly ran outside and embraced the cold air swiftly hitting your lungs, it's time to face facts: Winter is coming.

Yet, where there is cold and snow, there are also outdoor art experiences that can be enriched by the season. Rather than succumb to the hiding-out-indoors experience of galleries and museums, there are ways to enjoy seeing art outdoors in a hands-on — er, gloves-on — kind of way. Welcome to winter art-ing!
