Minnesota thrice

The Dave King Trio christened the Dunsmore Room when it opened at Crooners Lounge in December 2015. They've since returned about every six months. These world-famous Minnesotans — with King on drums, Bill Carrothers on piano and Billy Peterson on bass — offer a distinctive blend of playfulness and poignancy within the classic jazz piano trio format. Beats on tap

Four years ago at the Detroit Jazz Festival I saw tap dancer Savion Glover give a memorable performance with the McCoy Tyner Trio, something he has been doing on a regular basis for nearly a decade. Now Glover is literally playing and improvising songs with his feet for this all-percussion affair, featuring duets with drummer Marcus Gilmore. It's a meaty collaboration — Gilmore has been the timekeeper for top-notch pianists such as Vijay Iyer and Chick Corea, while Glover has performed jazz often enough that it is no longer a novelty project. Sing softly, carry a big bow

Katie Thiroux is a genuine double talent, capable of holding her own on bass or vocals. Her disc "Introducing Katie Thiroux" received a few Debut Album of the Year notices in 2015. And her follow-up, "Off Beat," again reveals her love and scholarship of mainstream jazz. She'll be in a trio with pianist Steven Feifke and longtime drummer Matt Witek. A real supergroup

The word "supergroup" gets tossed around a lot these days, but the Chick Corea & Steve Gadd Band qualifies. Corea is one of the most versatile and popular pianists in jazz. Gadd is a drummer's drummer who has appeared on hundreds of discs. Beninese guitarist Lionel Loueke is a Blue Note Records artist and first-call musician. Bassist Carlitos del Puerto is an original member of the seminal Cuban group Irakere and was hired by Sting and Springsteen for live projects. Saxophonist Steve Wilson makes every band he plays with sound good and Argentine percussionist Luisito Quintero fashions beats like liquid silver.
