Powwows at Lower Sioux Indian Reservation have shifted to handing out pipe tobacco to traditional tobacco harvested from a red willow tree from near the banks of the Minnesota River. Every November, Mat Pendleton leads groups through the snow to harvest the bark from the trees and pass on the tradition. It's part of a broader effort in Minnesota by American Indians to reclaim traditional tobacco while snuffing out harmful commercial tobacco like cigarettes.
