Gary Anger, interim superintendent of the Shakopee schools, will return to work Monday following a three-month leave to seek treatment for cancer.

Anger, 53, began an intensive treatment regimen for an aggressive form of small cell carcinoma in late October. Former Superintendent Jon McBroom stepped up as acting superintendent in his absence.

In an e-mail to district staff Friday morning, Anger announced he will transition back to work while he finishes a few treatments. McBroom will remain on staff to help Anger for several more weeks.

"I sincerely thank all of you for your support and encouragement while I have been receiving treatment," Anger wrote. "I also thank all of you for your outstanding work with our students and families while I have been away. ... I have read and held onto every single note from all of you and they provided me continuous strength," he said. "The heart of our schools and the people of our community are greater than any illness or difficulty."

The Shakopee school board approved Anger as the interim superintendent in July following the resignation of Rod Thompson, who faces dozens of felony charges alleging misuse of district credit cards.
