Park High School has named Craig Paul as interim principal while it looks for a permanent replacement for Efe Agbamu, who resigned this summer to take an administrative position in St. Paul.

Paul most recently ran the K-12 American International School in Egypt. He served as the principal of Wayzata High School from 1993 to 2008.

Paul will begin his new duties on Aug. 8.

"Dr. Paul's experience and outstanding leadership abilities are exactly what is needed at Park High School to continue their efforts and accomplishments of recent years," Superintendent Mark T. Porter said in a statement.

The district said it was naming an interim principal because of the timing of Agbamu's resignation -- there wasn't time to do a search before the new school year began. The plan is to start the search after Jan. 1 with the goal of having a new principal in place by July 1, 2012.

Agbamu is leaving South Washington County Schools to take charge of the English Language Learners department for St. Paul's public schools.

Agbamu won the state's Principal of the Year award in January for middle and high school principals. The award recognized her ability to achieve academic and community goals, improve teaching and learning, and encourage a positive school environment for staff and students.

Agbamu was at Park High School for four years.
