A most certain sign of spring — dependent not on early warmth or weird weather — is an American Goldfinch molting into spring plumage. This male is replacing winter feathers with his better-known bright yellow and deep black. This change is triggered by the increasing amount of daylight we are receiving. The sun's return path to the north might be the only climate constant we have.
