Twins star shortstop Carlos Correa and first baseman Joey Gallo both missed Wednesday's series-ending 7-1 victory over San Francisco at Target Field.
Correa didn't play either in Tuesday's 4-3 loss with what manager Rocco Baldelli called a mild muscle strain in his heel and some plantar fasciitis as well.
Gallo was out because of hamstring soreness experienced in Tuesday's game.
Baldelli said neither player is going on the injured list. They will receive treatment on Thursday's day off and be reevaluated on Friday for a weekend home series with Toronto.
"We don't think it's going to be an extended period of time where he's out," Baldelli said about Correa. "I think he's going to be OK. Some of it is going to be tolerance. We want to see some improvement with the things he's dealing with right now. We'll know more over the off day."
Correa said he "stepped in a weird way" after touching first base on his way to second with a double in Monday's fifth inning.
"I stopped and stayed there and I felt pain," Correa said. "I was like, oh, this is not normal."
He said he stayed in the game because the shorthanded Twins have few options off the bench.
"Hopefully with treatment, and rest, I can be back out there in the weekend," Correa said.
Double duty
Matt Wallner batted seventh and started at right field Wednesday, doubling for his first hit of the season for the Twins. But he had his own unique doubleheader on Tuesday.
He arrived at CHS Field at 7:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. game against Omaha and was told by Saints manager Toby Gardenhire he had good and bad news. Good news was Wallner was headed to the big leagues. Bad news is he had another game at 6:40 p.m., one in which he pinch hit for the Twins.
"It was a long day," Wallner said.
Maneuverings
Kyle Farmer again started at Correa's shortstop spot and Alex Kirilloff played first base and batted cleanup. Edouard Julien hit in the leadoff spot that Gallo occupied Tuesday.
Baldelli said Gallo could get from base to base if needed, but…
"I don't really want to know what that would look like," Baldelli said. "We're not going to see what that looks like today. I'm hoping that a couple of days off his feet will help him. We don't want to lose him for any extended period, either. That's kind of why he's not in the lineup today."
Kepler coming back?
Julien led off the game in the Twins' first with his third home run this season and his first career leadoff homer.
He did so for a team that has Jorge Polanco, Trevor Larnach, Nick Gordon and Max Kepler on the injured list and others such as Correa and Gallo hurting.
"He is very valuable, of course," Baldelli said, referring to Correa. "We also have to know what's going on around him on the roster and who here is capable of what. We're not going to go an extended period of time down multiple players."
Baldelli said Kepler — placed on the 10-day IL with a strained hamstring on May 13 — "might be the first guy back of all these guys who are returning. That's my hope, at least."
Saints walk off with win
Jose Miranda hit a walkoff single to give the St. Paul Saints a 6-5 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers at CHS Field Wednesday night. Miranda finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, including an RBI single in the five-run second inning.
Royce Lewis finished his sixth rehab game with the Saints by playing seven innings and going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
