A security guard watching over private property in north Minneapolis had to summon police help after somebody in a large group of trespassers pointed an assault rifle at him Thursday night.
By the time the incident was over, police had detained 11 people, recovered drugs, $80,000 cash and at least 10 firearms from one of the vehicles, said Sgt. Catherine Michal of the Minneapolis Police Department.
The 29-year-old guard was working in the area of Dowling Avenue N. and Port of Minneapolis Drive just east of Interstate 94 when the gun-pointing occurred about 10:25 p.m. His 911 call touched off a manhunt in which at least 18 officers canvassed the area looking for suspects and multiple vehicles spotted leaving the property. A State Patrol helicopter also flew over the area to aid officers in the search, Michal said.
Police arrested two 22-year-old men on suspicion of narcotics and weapons violations. They were both booked into the Hennepin County jail.
Nine other men and two juveniles were cited for trespassing and released, according to an incident report.
The guard was patrolling the industrial property located approximately 2 miles from downtown Minneapolis along the west bank of the Mississippi River, between Lowry Avenue N. and the Camden Bridge, when he spotted the group of men.
One of the men told the guard the group was making a video. When the guard asked the group to leave, one of the men pointed an AK-47 rifle at him, Michal said.
Police descended on the area and found the suspects along with drugs, weapons and cash.
