With signing day on the horizon, the Gophers added another member to their 2021 recruiting class.
Luther McCoy, a 6-4, 290-pound defensive tackle out of Florida, announced his commitment Wednesday with a first-person narrative published in his local newspaper.
"A big part of it for me is the coaches. Just talking to most of them, and I feel more comfortable with them as a person, not just as a player," McCoy wrote. "... I feel like the defense fits me really well. I've watched some of their games, and their defensive linemen play four downs, and that's what I want to play in college. Based on the videos and what I've seen, the campus is really nice, and I'm looking forward to being there the next four years."
McCoy missed a significant number of games his freshman and sophomore seasons at Creekside High School with injuries, including torn labrums. But this past season, he made 44 tackles, five sacks, eight quarterback pressures, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, a blocked kick and a defensive touchdown through nine games.
The lineman picked the Gophers despite offers from Baylor, Duke and Georgia Tech. The three-star recruit, per 247Sports.com, is the 17th member of the 2021 class for the Gophers. That class, which ranks eighth in the Big Ten and 26th in the nation, should officially sign Dec. 16.
