High-scoring Gophers face rugged Hoyas defense

Preview: The Gophers (8-1) are coming off an 80-56 victory over Eastern Michigan on Sunday at Williams Arena. In the victory, the Gophers had a season-high 26 assists (on 31 field goals). Georgetown (4-3) is coming off a 77-56 victory over Florida International on Nov. 29 at home. The Hoyas have four returning starters from last season's team (17-13 overall, 9-9 Big East). The Gophers defeated the Hoyas 68-60 in Minneapolis last season.

Players to watch: Two Gophers reserves scored season highs on Sunday. Center Bryanna Fernstrom had 17 points and nine rebounds in 18 minutes and forward Taiye Bello had 16 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes. Hoyas guard Dionna White, a preseason All-Big East selection, is averaging 17.6 points per game. Guard Mikayla Venson, who sat out last season after transferring from Virginia, is averaging 13 points per game. Forward Cynthia Petke, a 6-2 senior from Cameroon, is averaging 12.6 points and 11.7 rebounds.

Numbers: Nine Gophers have scored at least 10 points in a game at least once this season. The Gophers are averaging 87.1 points per game — third in the Big Ten and 10th in the nation. The Hoyas hold foes to 54.9 points per game.
