A late-night fire on a central Minnesota farm killed thousands of turkeys, authorities said.

The blaze broke out about 1:20 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin Farm Inc. on County Road 12 in St. Martin Township, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

Fire personnel arrived at the scene, roughly 15 miles north of Paynesville, to find the one of the barns fully engulfed in flames, the Sheriff's Office said.

The eastern section of the 1,000-square-foot barn took the brunt of the damage and was "a total loss," a statement from the Sheriff's Office read. Other sections were slightly damaged.

Roughly 6,000 turkeys died in the fire, the Sheriff's Office said.

How the fire started remains under investigation.
