U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Minn., said one of his daughters has an advanced stage of lung cancer.

Nolan, who represents the Eighth District, shared the "difficult news" about his 40-year-old daughter in a posting Monday on his congressional Facebook page.

"My youngest daughter, Katherine, has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma cancer," Nolan's post read. "The good news is that she is remarkably strong and determined to win this fight, and of course our entire family will support her every step of the way."

Nolan added that he would be in Minnesota for a couple of days to meet with doctors — and that meant he missed the swearing-in of the new Congress on Tuesday.
