After a pandemic-induced hiatus, Walker Art Center is bringing back its annual autumn fundraising gala with a special guest — Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of the Roots.

Hot off his acclaimed directing debut "Summer of Soul," the drummer/filmmaker will DJ a dance party at the Sept. 18 event along with Shannon Blowtorch. Rapper Dessa also will perform.

Besides offering food, cocktails and an art auction, the renamed event — it's now "Party In/The Garden," a departure from "Avant Garden" — returns with virtual and in-person options.

"As we were planning 'Party In/The Garden' in the midst of dual pandemics, it was important to all involved that the Walker's annual benefit remain inclusive and safe," said Kerstin Beyer, director of the museum's Annual Fund. "A hybrid model offered a us way to engage folks wherever they are, just as they are."

Ticket prices start at $125 a pop, but the online event can be viewed for free.

The gala will take place in a 20,000-square-foot pavilion with a deck overlooking the Spoonbridge and Cherry and downtown skyline.

Proceeds support the Walker's artistic and educational programs. Sales begin at 11 a.m. Thursday online at walkerart.org or by phone at 612-375-7641.
