One person died and a second was taken to a hospital with noncritical injuries following a two-car crash involving a stolen vehicle early Thursday in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood on St. Paul's East Side.

Investigators on Thursday afternoon continued to look for two men who had been in the stolen car and ran from the scene after the broadside collision, which happened just after 3 a.m. at E. Minnehaha Avenue and Atlantic Street, not far from Harding High School, said St. Paul police spokesman Mike Ernster.

Two women, ages 18 and 23, who also were passengers in the stolen Ford Focus, were interviewed and released, Ernster said.

An officer spotted the Focus near N. Frank Street and Phalen Boulevard and turned to follow the car, but did not activate the squad's emergency lights or pursue it, Ernster said.

The Focus turned south on Atlantic Street and is believed to have run a stop sign at Minnehaha, where it broadsided a PT Cruiser, Ernster said.

The driver of the Cruiser, a 60-year-old woman, died at the scene. Her name has not been released. Paramedics treated her passenger, a 59-year-old woman, and took her to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Ernster said.

Police have not disclosed descriptions of the suspects.
