Johnson, Beverly Post age 97, died peacefully on February 20, 2023 in Edina, MN. Bev was born in Shawano, WI on September 15, 1925. Bev's mother Clara Post, née Mertins, died when Bev was 2. Her father Charles (aka Charley) Post raised her and his other two daughters ages 12 and 14, until he died at the age of 87 in 1943, leaving Bev on her own at the age of 17. Bev moved to Chicago, doing secretarial work in a law firm. Later she moved to Minneapolis to live with her sister and attend college at the University of Minnesota. It was there that she met Jerry Johnson from New Richland, MN in 1947. They had a 9-month courtship and were married in a simple ceremony with just a few attendees on March 27, 1948. After Jerry graduated from the U of M and served in the US Army, they lived in Michigan, where their first son Scott was born in 1952. They moved to Bloomington, MN in 1954. They then bought their last home in Hopkins, MN in 1958. They lived there the rest of their lives. Bev moved to The Waters of Edina assisted living in February 2022. Bev returned to college and graduated from the U of M with a teaching degree in 1963, while pregnant with their 5th son Leif. She was a Substitute Teacher for several years and then became a full time Special Education (EBD) teacher at Hopkins High School. She worked there from 1975-1992. She was one of the early pioneers of Special Ed services in the state of MN and the country. Bev's greatest joy was raising her "5 boys." She nurtured relationships with people of all ages within a vast number of social groups. She had teaching friends, Interlachen Park friends, lake friends, yoga friends, participated in the Woman's Club of MN, OLLI Elder Learning, a knitting group, and two bridge groups. Bev was an avid tennis player into her 60's and started yoga at age 83. She continued doing yoga until she was 96, using Zoom for the last 2 years. Bev was a frequent attendee of the Minnesota Orchestra and a world traveler. In 1980, she and her husband Jerry built a cabin on Lower Cullen Lake in Nisswa MN. She loved mornings on the dock watching the loons. Bev will be missed by many. Family, friends, and students will remember her loving impact. Preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Gerald (Jerry) Jonas Johnson, her two sisters Nona and Mary, 7 half-brothers and sisters, and grandson Sebastian. Survived by sons Scott (Caroline), Brett (Terri), Todd (Beth), Rolf (aka RJ), and Leif (Samantha), grandchildren Ethan, Charlotte, Bennett (Katie), Jackie, Pierce, Charlie, Connor, Alexandra, Anthony, Bix, Tallulah, and Penn, great-grandchildren Cooper and Carter. A celebration of her life will be held for family and friends in April. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Resource West bit.ly/… or the Hopkins Education Foundation bit.ly/…
