Elizabeth (Betty) Jane Mally was born in New Richmond WI on January 16, 1922 to Florence and Emil Mally. Elizabeth passed away peacefully on March 11, 2023. Betty grew up in Rice Lake WI with two younger sisters, Ginny and Pat. After high school she attended St. Mary's nursing school in Minneapolis, MN where she met James (Jim) Rounds. He enlisted in the Navy as an engineering officer, and they married in 1944 before he shipped out to the Pacific during WWII. Betty worked as a nurse at St. Vincent DePaul hospital in Norfolk VA and the VA hospital in Minneapolis during the war. When Jim returned, they lived in Minneapolis, Fargo, Richfield, and settled in St. Louis Park, MN and raised eight children: Jim Rounds (Anne Mankin), Kathleen Rounds (Roger Schwarz), Mary Mathies (Werner Treichler), John Rounds (Ruth), Dan Rounds (Laure), Jean Reichel (Pat), Anne Sponsel (Steve), and Theresa (Mary Philippson). Betty returned to nursing at Chapel View in Hopkins, MN after the children left home as well as caring for her aging parents. Jim passed away in 1999. Elizabeth loved life and knew how to "smell the roses and watch for birds along the way." She was proud of having lived to 101, and then some. She loved bird watching, walking, traveling, Twins baseball, reading, treats, surprises and spending time with her family. She is survived by all her children, sixteen grandchildren, and five great- grandchildren who will treasure their memories of a much beloved, remarkable, and inspiring woman. There will be a private burial service at Fort Snelling Cemetery on March 24 and a celebration of her life in May at Westwood Nature Center where she loved to walk. Funeral arrangements are being made by Washburn-McReavy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to Westwood Hills Nature Center (8300 W. Franklin Ave, St. Louis Park, MN 55426) in memory of Elizabeth Rounds.
