Mary (Lucken) Gozum

Mary, beloved mother and grandmother, age 89, passed away peacefully with daughter Stephanie Gozum, grandson Gabriel, and cousin Mary Gergen at her side on January 23, 2023. Survived by children, John and Stephanie; grandchildren, Jason, Gabriel, Matthew, and Kathryn; and many cousins. Preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Kathryn (Miller) Lucken; husband, Ekrem Gozum; and daughter, Greta Gozum. Mary was born March 6, 1933 in Hastings, Minnesota. She attended the College of St. Catherine for an undergraduate degree in biology and an associates degree in bacteriology. While working as a Bacteriologist at Midway Hospital, she met and married her husband and soulmate, Ekrem, a resident Otolaryngologist. Mary was a devout Roman Catholic, actively serving the church as a catechist and eucharistic minister in her younger years. Even as a teenager she had strong will and perseverance, known to have hung by her knees at the top of Prospect Park Tower and to be the first woman to waterski on the St. Croix. Mary had many hobbies including gardening, swimming, cooking, and travel. She was an accomplished watercolorist and enjoyed rosemaling and playing the piano. She was a classy lady that led by example and was admired by others for her kindness, humility, and grace. Mary was a strong woman, surviving viral encephalitis in her 60s. Although she lived the last 30 years of her life legally blind, she did not slow down. She passed away less than a month after her cancer diagnosis under the loving care at Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul. A dedicated and deeply caring wife, mother, and grandmother, friends and family will remember Mary for her passion for working in her gardens, kind heart, and incredible devotion to family. Her daily phone calls with "don't forget your prayers" and "I love you mores" will be dearly missed. Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, January 30th at the Church of St. Patrick, 6820 St. Patricks Lane, Edina, MN 55439. Visitation will be 1 hour before the Mass.
