Porterfield, Stephanie Brown Died at home in New York City on January 12, 2023. She was born October 3, 1935 in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Edwin Willis Brown and Cassaline Stephenson Brown. After graduating from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1957, she moved to Minneapolis and spent five years as a reporter at the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. While working there, she met her future husband, James Christopher Porterfield. They married in 1962 and relocated to New York City, where she spent a year working for Look magazine. Over the next ten years, she would live in Washington DC, Chicago, New York City (three times), and London, as well as become a mother three times. Stephanie was active in local community endeavors, working at her kids' schools, engaging in community organizations, volunteering for the Central Park Conservancy, serving on the scholarship board for Adirondack Camp, and was a rare, avid believer in jury duty. She took immense pride in doing her part to ensure democracy at the local level. She was heavily interested in the development of family properties which inspired her to become a NARO Certified Mineral Manager, the first woman to do so, calling herself "a city slicker who's into combines, corn, and soybeans". Despite spending most of her life in New York and other cities, she was drawn to nature and enjoyed sailing, canoeing, hiking, fishing, and hot-air ballooning. She had a boisterous laugh, and felt a deep connection to her Brown family heritage. She is survived by her sons, Christopher B. Porterfield of New York, NY, and his children, Maya of New York, NY, and Christopher of Hermosa Beach, CA; Kevin Porterfield, and his wife, Bridget, and their two children, Wren and Ike, of Chicago, IL; and by her brother, Michael Brown and his wife, Sandy Brown of Bozeman, MT. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Christopher Porterfield and daughter, Tessa Porterfield. All deeply mourn the warmth and loss of Stevie's love while cherishing the many wonderful years with her. A private memorial graveside service was held in Elmwood, IL on Friday, January 27, 2023.
