Wudlick, Henry Robert "Bud" age 77, of Excelsior, MN, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2022. Bud was loved by family and friends, known for his kind and eclectic character. He was constantly creating things: cedar-strip canoes, hand blown glass vases, welded metal sculptures, whimsical wood carvings, clay creatures, cartoons, acrylic paintings, saunas, house additions. For the past few decades he carried his sketchbook everywhere, observing his fellow breakfast diners at such places as Al's Diner, The Egg and I, Hart's Cafe (and Sunsets), The Original Pancake House in Wayzata, and Dunn Brothers' Coffee in Excelsior, just to name a few. Sunrises, farmsteads, boats, the shores of Lake Superior, the American West, animals (including his cat), are all themes that fill his sketchbooks and vibrant broad stroke acrylic paintings. He freely shared humorous conversation, his pen-and-ink drawings and colorful paintings with many dear friends and acquaintances. For much of his life he was an avid bicyclist, x-country skier and BWCAW canoer. Summers were spent with his family driving around Minnesota, Wisconsin and the West, always camping, exploring the backroads. That is, when he wasn't rebuilding his house. He is missed. Bud was born on August 25, 1945 in Green Bay, WI while his father was still on a Navy ship in the Pacific. He spent his childhood in the Green Bay area and Honolulu, HI, moving to Minnesota in junior high, and then living most of his life with his wife, LuAnn and children, Marta and Rob, in their cozy cabin-like home near the shores of Lake Minnetonka. After graduating from Edina High School in 1963, he enrolled at the U of M, finding his way to the sculpture department and dear mentor, Katherine Nash. She helped guide him to pursue a meaningful career of teaching art for three decades with the Minneapolis Public Schools, mostly at Jefferson Elementary. Bud and LuAnn met at a dance on Halloween in 1965 and were married in December of 1969. He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry James and Edith (nee Giese) and his sister, Diane Brodigan. He is survived by wife, LuAnn Lindsey; daughter, Marta (Dan) Snow; son, Robert; grandchildren, Isabela and Lucy Snow; as well as 9 nieces and nephews and their parents. A gathering will be held in Spring 2023 to remember Bud. Donations can be made in his honor to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, MN.
