Johnson, Paul John age 59 born July 12, 1962 in Minneapolis passed from this life in peace Friday, August 27, 2021, his family by his side. Paul bravely endured one and a half years of a vicious cancer. His HCMC team, Hennepin Healthcare nurses and team and his loving family assisted Paul in home hospice care for four weeks. The Johnson family's summer was spent in Paul's backyard under the maple tree with visits from friends, family and the small animals and birds. We all will greatly miss Paul but comforted knowing he is relieved of the excruciating pain he lived through without complaint. Paul maintained lifelong friendships with numerous buddies from his Lynnhurst Park, Washburn High School soccer, hockey and golf days. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota with a law degree from Hamline Law School where he received a solid grounding in law while clerking for Judge Harry Crump. Thereafter he served as Assistant County Attorney for seven years in Winona county and then to Carver. Paul moved to California in 1997, married the love of his life, Marilyn, and made San Diego and LaMesa his home, again making deep and lasting friendships. He pursued his creativity through work as a precise craftsman and designer with textiles, wood, stone, leather and gardening while racing as a cyclist, Harley touring and skiing. He became an urban chicken farmer complete with coop. Nearby, Paul designed and constructed a 20 foot high tree house that served as a sleeping room. In 2004 he and friend Patrick Hoz (Megan) became business partners and opened the Cosmos Coffee Shop in LaMesa. "Not an ordinary coffee shop," employees wrote, "Paul and Pat fostered an atmosphere of compassion, friendship, humor, honesty, understanding and responsibility allowing them, the employees to grow and spread these traits throughout the world." Paul moved back to Minneapolis in 2015 to be closer to his family and aging parents. He renovated his second home and continued to be productive sewing masks for protection from the COVID 19. An avid golfer, his annual golf tournament hosted by Jim Sherman (Sheila, son Trevor), with many good friends, "The Orange Whip," Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, will carry on. As one family member said it well: "Paul connected with those around himHe brought so much joy and laughter to our family but also calmness and deep thinking. We are truly proud to call him our brother." Paul's family will always keep him close in our hearts. He is survived by parents Warren and Carol; siblings Pat Johnson (Cary Strandjord), Jim Johnson and Paula Johnson (Phillip Qualy); nephews and nieces Jacob Johnson, Robert Lysholm (Katrina DeVore), Teegan Torkel-son, Arielle Johnson Torkelson Pudwill (Andrew), Allie Johnson, Danielle Bernards, Josie Johnson Ramirez (Jose), Samie Johnson, Ryan Strandjord, Alysse Strandjord Krieger (Matt), and Logan Strandjord (Johannah); grand nieces and nephews Ruby, Domenic, Matilda Jo, Jacqueline, Ivan, Nash and Sonny James, many aunts, uncles, cousins and former wife Marilyn Miller. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bernhard and LuVerne Johnson, and Ralph and Gertye Knute; uncles Tom Johnson, Bob Johnson, Russell Knute, Merton Knute. A private Celebration of Life for family and friends is planned for Sat., Sept. 25 from 2 to 5:00 "Under the maple tree" at Paul's. A larger memorial service for Paul is planned for the summer of 2022. We urge all to be COVID 19 safe.
