Hemenway, Alvin "Al" Benjamin who was immensely proud of his family and his Army Air Corps service during WWII, died on May 27, 2021, at the age of 97. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and lived by the mantra of 'mind over matter'. This practice didn't really increase his success with hunting or fishing, but it did free him during his final years when he was confined to a wheelchair - because in his mind he was still flying over mountains and driving to Florida to escape Minnesota winters. His sense of humor and joy of storytelling (especially about 'the big one' that got away) made him 'quite the character' as he was often described by family, friends and the staff at Encore Assisted Living in Champlin, MN, his residence. Al is preceded in death by his wife Ethel Kelly Hemenway, his father and mother; Benjamin and Hazel Hemenway, his sisters; Marie Staph and Ardis VanWychen. He is survived by his son Scott Hemenway (Angela); daughters Jill Hemenway Baker, Julie Macheledt (Tim), Beth Hemenway Wills and son Kyle Hemenway (Rochelle); and 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grand-children. There will be a private family memorial service on July 19, 2021, at Fort Snelling. (In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Ducks Unlimited, a non-profit for the conservation of waterfowl habitat.)
