Carolyn Patricia Thomas

Thomas, Carolyn Patricia Age 77, died peacefully on June 7 due to complica-tions from Alzheimer 's disease. She is mourned by her husband of nearly 51 years, Drew; as well as children: Andrew, Ben, Ellen, Janet, and John; and 17 grandchildren. Born in Ohio in 1943 to the late Kenneth and Mabel Wallace, the family relocated to Alaska as homesteaders in 1947. Carolyn is also survived by brothers, Stephen and Donald; and sister, Marcia. As a young woman Carolyn excelled in school, earning scholarships to fund her bachelor's degree from the University of Alaska. Carolyn's hard work, determination and talent led her to be the first woman accepted to earn a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition from Penn State University. At Penn State she met Andrew Thomas, whom she would marry in 1970. She supported Drew through medical school. The family moved to Minnesota where Carolyn served as member and then president of everything from the elementary school PTA to the MN Chapter of the Institute of Food Technologists. Professionally, Carolyn was responsible for the development of many familiar food products through her work at Deli Express and General Mills. Carolyn was a faithful and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as an anchor of faith for many.
