Donovan, William Patrick "Bill" died peacefully on June 4, 2021. Bill was born December 2, 1929 in Saint Louis, Missouri and grew up in Kirkwood, MO. He graduated from Washington University, A.B.,1951 (Art and Archaeology) and M.A. (Ancient History), 1952. He earned a Ph.D. in Classics in 1961 from the University of Cincinnati. While working towards his Ph.D, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 1955, which allowed him to spend three years in Greece conducting archaeological research. After returning to the United States in 1958, he began a teaching career at Florida State University focusing on Ancient Greek, Archaeology, and Art History. In 1961 he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois, and in 1966, he moved to Minnesota to teach at Macalester College. He also spent multiple summers teaching at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Bill was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1971 after studying at Westcott House in Cambridge UK. Serving at several churches, Bill was on the staff as a Canon of St. Mark's Cathedral in Minneapolis for 45 years. In 1955 Bill married Patricia A. O'Keefe whom he met while they were students at the University of Cincinnati. She was also a Fulbright scholar at the American School of Classical Studies (1955-56) and spent her career as a post-secondary and secondary school educator. He is survived by his son Kevin Patrick Donovan (Molly), his daughter Maura Grace Donovan (David Whitman), and by four grandchildren: Sean Donovan (Nicola Carpenter), Bridget Donovan, Alexander Whitman (Cailin Rogers), and Peter Whitman. Bill had a great love of children's literature, and enjoyed traveling and spending time at the family's summer cottage in Georgian Bay, Ontario. To celebrate Bill's life, a Memorial Evensong will be in 2022. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the donor's favorite charity.
