Eugene Kenneth 'Gene' Cherney

Cherney, Eugene "Gene" Kenneth Age 88, died on January 15, 2021, in Minneapolis, MN, of complications from Alzheimer's. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Arvilla (Loffler) Cherney, who passed 32 days prior to his death; his parents, Ignace and Katherine (Cafourek) Cherney and stepmother, Josephine (Bogden) Cherney; brothers, Ernest Cherney, Richard Cherney, Mark Wichman, Gene Wichman and Ignace "Butch" Cherney. Eugene is survived by his sisters, Carol (Cherney) Gaylord and Kay (Cherney) Traverse; sons, Steven (Debbie) Cherney, Douglas (Lisa) Cherney, & Daughter, Martha (Noah) Dalton; and his six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Gene was born on November 29, 1932, in Myrtle, MN. He graduated from University of Illinois with a Bachelor's degree in Geology. At the University, Gene achieved greatness on the gridiron being named MVP of the University of Illinois Football team in 1958 and named to the Blue-Grey Football team. Prior to attending college, he served with distinction in Army Intelligence while stationed in the Philippines. Gene was a great man, husband, loving father, businessman, teacher and coach. He married Arvilla Loffler on June 9, 1957, and the couple had four children together, including a daughter who died at birth. His positivity and strength were renowned by all who knew him. His family and friends remember Gene as a funny, loving and caring person. He will be missed but never forgotten as a man among men. All are welcome to attend Arvilla and Gene's celebration of life.
