Flory, Stewart Gilman of Minneapolis died on Friday, November 27, 2020, after suffering from Altzheimer's disease his last few years. Born in New York City in 1941, Stewart received his B.A. and PhD degrees from Yale University. He taught Classics first at Amherst College in Massachusetts, and then for 30 years at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota, where he was an esteemed teacher, a lively wit, and a passionate advocate for the liberal arts. Stewart specialized in ancient Greek literature and culture, and authored the study The Archaic Smile of Herodotus on the man called the "Father of History." International professional awards enabled Stewart to travel often to Greece and to Italy, where he loved to combine academic research with enjoyment of the local culture and cuisine. Stewart was a gourmet cook, always eager to share his talents with family and friends. Stewart is survived by his wife Ellie, his children Alexandra (age 11) and twins Noah and Katya (age 7), and by his sister Marjorie of Shelburne, Vermont. He will be greatly missed. Marleen Boudreau Flory, Stewart's beloved first wife, preceded him in death. A memorial will be held at a later date.
