Kelly, Shirley 82, of Bloomington passed away peacefully on September 21 after a short battle with cancer. She was fortunately able to come home with hospice care and was surrounded by family. Shirley was born in Faribault, Minnesota on 12/31/1937 to Leo and Marie (Friesen) Thomas and was a graduate of Bethlehem Academy in Faribault. Shirley married David Kelly on September 2nd, 1961, and they resided briefly in Minneapolis and for the last 57 years lived in Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Marie; and brothers in law, Fred Coller and Ken Menden. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, David; sons Michael (Penny), Mark, and Brian (Maria); daughters, Maureen (John) Herzog, and Kathleen (Corey) Whitbeck. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Amanda (John), Paige, Sam, Jacob, Max, Avery, Luke and Benjamin; and sisters Kathy (Bob) Lindell, JoAnn Coller, Patti (Jerry) Hilton and Barb Menden; and many nieces and nephews. Though always busy with family, she found time to teach religion classes, coach softball, volunteer at school and coordinate the funeral lunch program at her church. Shirley was loved by all who knew her, especially her family. She made everyone in her presence feel special. She was kind and generous and welcomed many into her home. Shirley loved cooking for a crowd and did so often. She was a wonderful mother, homemaker, and excellent cook. Her grandkids she doted on them and they adored her. Shirley was famous for her potato salad and meatballs and could make any meal wonderful. People were drawn to her for her contagious smile, fun-loving wit, wise advice, and kind-hearted spirit. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by family and friends. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, September 30, at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, 9900 Lyndale Ave South, Bloomington, at 10:00 a.m. Visitation at 9:00 a.m. Mask and social distancing protocols will be followed.
