Oelke, Ervin Albert age 86, of Shoreview, MN died at home surrounded by his family on September 10, 2020, after a valiant battle with cancer. Remembered for his pride of family, sweet kindness, always lending a helping hand, love of gardening, birds, Gopher sports, golfing, Kiwanis, and time with friends. Erv grew up on a Wisc dairy farm, graduated from Fall River High School, Veteran of US Army. Married high school sweetheart Elizabeth Firary. Earned a PhD in Agronomy at Univ of WI-Madison. Was a professor at Univ of CA-Davis then Dept of Agronomy and Plant Genetics Univ of MN. Considered an international expert on wild rice and received numerous awards. In retirement, enjoyed writing a book "Saga of the Grain", traveling the world, researching genealogy, dance club and volunteering. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Beth; children Keith (Carol), Sharon (Chris) Zinselmeier, grandchildren Nick, Amanda, Matt, Tom and Anna; sisters Gert, Ruth (Charlie); brother Helmuth (Arlene). Preceded in death by sister Frieda, brother Arnold. Private family internment at Roselawn cemetery. Memorials to: North Suburban Golden K Foundation or Meals on Wheels Ramsey County.
