Jackson, Rev. Dr. Jerald Hugh 87, died peacefully May 29, 2020 at his home in Edina, Minn. He was born May 17, 1933 in Brookings, S.D., to Olin D. Jackson and Edna A. (Hansen) Jackson, and married April 27, 1957 to Jane Shirk. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, a sister and three brothers. He is survived by his son Stephen (Karen Larson) Jackson and Thomas (Kim) Jackson, and grandchildren Elizabeth, Julia, Vivian, Olin and Jessie, and two sisters, Vivian Skoog and Joan Ripple. The family will hold a private service. Memorials may be made to Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church (music fund), Minnesota Historical Society or Children's Home Society of Minnesota. Jackson was a graduate of Hamline University and Garrett Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the Methodist Church and served church in Mokena and Plainfield, Ill.; Le Sueur, Golden Valley and Minneapolis, Minn.; and, through pastoral exchanges, the Isle of Mann and Sheffield, England. While on sabbatical, he wrote a congregational study guide on the Apostle Paul. He retired from pastoral ministry in 1984 as senior pastor of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. From 1985 to 1997, Jackson directed the United Methodist Foundation of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The Jacksons then returned to Minnesota, where he became vice president of development and planned giving for Children's Home Society of Minnesota, and then in 2005 served in the same capacity for the Minnesota Historical Society, from which he retired at the age of 80. Jerry explored much of the world with Jane, visiting Alaska, England, France, Scandinavia, Russia and several former Soviet bloc countries. An avid reader, swimmer, hiker, and lover of ideas and questions, he also enjoyed hanging out with his five grandchildren and supporting their growth and interests. He will be deeply missed.
