Donald C. Deakyne
Deakyne, Donald C. Age 91, of Minnetonka, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife JoAnn and their large and loving family. He was cared for spiritually by the community of St. David's church and by those who knew him as the proprietor of Deakyne's True Value Hardware in Minnetonka. Don was born and grew up in Kearney, NJ. He enlisted in the Marines after high school and served two years at the end of WWII in Key West, FL. He attended Bucknell College in Lewisburg, PA where he earned a degree in civil engineering and met his first wife, Beverly Newcum. They raised four children together, living primarily in Detroit MI. Don also earned an MBA from Wayne State University in Detroit. After moving to Minnetonka, Don met JoAnn Rood (Meester) who was his cherished companion and soulmate. Her four daughters were as important to him as his own children. Both Don and JoAnn unfailingly referred to all eight offspring as "our children." Don and JoAnn opened Deakyne's True Value Hardware at the intersection of Hwy 101 and Minnetonka Blvd in 1977, which is still owned by family members. Don was also very active at St. David's Episcopal Church, where he faithfully served in various volunteer positions. Don loved his family most of all, but a large group of neighbors, friends, customers and suppliers will also mourn his passing. Many enjoyed the "soft shoe" routines he organized for each of his children's weddings and for the St. David's annual talent show. Don loved an audience. He is survived by wife of 43 years, JoAnn, son Jeffrey (Stacy), daughters Elise Jamison (Lee), Amy Timm (Ron), Jenny Pippen (Dennis), Deborah Rood, Kathryn Rasmussen (Dan Eastman), Susan Hansen, Lisa Strachota (Mark Sheetz), 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild, due this summer. Also survived by sister Kathryn (Kay) Proctor and two nieces. Private interment at Groveland Cemetery. A public celebration of life may take place at a later date. Memorials preferred to St. David's Episcopal Church in Minnetonka. Washburn-McReavy.com Strobeck Johnson 952-938-9020
