Dahlstrom, Eleanor "Elly" Barnes February 26, 1928 - June 5, 2017 age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on June 5, 2017 in Reno, NV. Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN she graduated from North High '46, attended Gustavus Adolphus College and received her BA in Social Work from the University of Minnesota '50. She married Howard J Dahlstrom 6/8/51 and moved to California. Their 3 children were born in the Bay Area and in 1959 the family moved to Lake Oswego, OR a suburb of Portland. Howard passed away in 1984, Elly retired as a social worker from the State of OR in 1988 and in 1990 she joined the Peace Corps which sent her to Ghana, West Africa for 2 years. In 1994 she became a WACAP volunteer and worked in the orphanages of Romania for 1 1/2 yrs. On returning to Lake Oswego she would spend many years working with family friend and fellow social worker Caroline Wilson on a Crisis Hotline as well as volunteering in the Women's Clinic up on the hill at OHSU. She would continue to enjoy traveling both in and out of the country. Though senior dementia clouded her life the past few years she always knew family and friends, many of whom can attest she kept her bright, smart, sassiness to the end. Elly is survived by her children Tom Dahlstrom, Mercer Island, WA, Debby Dahlstrom, Reno, NV, and Dan (Nina) Dahlstrom, Sparks, NV, cousin Jessie Quick, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial gatherings were held in Lake Oswego and Reno. Elly was fond of saying, "I haven't a clue why we are here but it seems to me that since we are we should be treating each other well".
