Calhoon, Elizabeth Early in the morning on Sunday, January 26, the world lost an incredible woman, Elizabeth (Beth) Barrett Barstow Calhoon - a beloved Bubbe, Mom, Wife, Aunt, Mom-in-law, Cousin, Sister, Sister-in-law, Friend, Sister-friend and Neighbor. Beth was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Calhoon, her brother, William F. Barstow, her parents William and Jane Barstow, and her aunt and uncle, Geraldine and Jack Barstow. Beth is survived by her children Sarah (David), John (Stacey), Chris (Mary Pat), Rob (Alanna) and her beloved grandchildren Anna, Thomas, Emily, Grace, Sam, Avery, Andrew, Katie and Lucy. Beth was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1933. She graduated from Cornell University in 1955. She lived and worked in New York City for the Pellon Corporation, enjoying East Coast life with her Cornell friends for several years. She and Harvey met and fell in love in New York, getting married there in 1961. In 1963 they moved to the south suburbs of Chicago where they settled, raised their family, engaged deeply in the community and enjoyed life with an amazing group of friends. After Harvey passed away in 2006, Beth decided it was time for her to move "home to the motherland - Minnesota". She lived in Lakeville for several years and then moved to become part of the wonderful Episcopal Homes community of St Paul in 2017. Beth loved her family and friends deeply and completely. She was loving, funny, mischievous, willful, kind and fiercely independent. She was devoted to creating amazing food for anyone who joined her table (along with Trader Joe's wine!), spending time enjoying life and stories with girlfriends, listening to an amazing range of music from Ella and Frank to classical, barbershop, jazz and, of course, broadway musicals! She was a life-long Episcopalian, deeply committed to social justice, equality, taking care of our precious earth and caring for all those around her. We miss her terribly. The hole in our hearts can only be filled by living as she did - in service and love to all. Your family will love you forever Bubbe. A funeral service for Beth will be held on Wednesday morning, January 29th at 10am in Coventry Chapel at the Episcopal Homes of Minnesota, 1842 University Avenue, St Paul, MN 55104. A reception with the family will follow. An interment service will be held at a later date at St John's Episcopal Church in Flossmoor, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests donations be made in her honor to organizations that support the causes about which she cared deeply - access to music education for all children, support of women and children in need, support for the homeless, securing housing for all, and animal rescue. A few of her favorite organizations include: Sounds of Illinois Community Music Center (ilcmc.org), South Suburban P.A.D.S. (SSPADS.ORG), South Suburban Humane Society (southsuburbanhumane.org), Nuzzles & Co. of Park City, UT (nuzzlesandco.org), and Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org).
