Maurine Ann (Grant) Avery

Avery, Maurine Ann (Grant) 8/19/1929 1/20/2020 Age 90, passed away on January 20, 2020. Born and raised in South St. Paul, she was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in Economics. She was an active member of Chapel Hills United Church of Christ in Edina for many years. Maurine leaves behind a strong family legacy including five children, 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Maurine offered unconditional love to her family, who are grateful for her steady, supportive influence in their lives. Her friends and family remember her as someone of exceptional kindness and empathy, with a keen interest in making the world a better place. During college, she met her future husband while working a summer job at Glacier National Park. She married Gene Avery of Cleveland, OH in 1951. They lived briefly in Berkeley, CA and New Haven, CT, eventually settling in St. Paul. The family also lived in Duluth, Edina and Seattle, with Maurine and Gene retiring to Bloomington, MN. Always learning and challenging herself with new experiences, she earned a second college degree from St. Scholastica in the 1970s and began a career in medical records administration. She co- authored the book Medical Records in Ambulatory Care in 1984. After retiring, she became an experienced traveler to Europe, visiting Sweden, Romania, Germany, Italy and the Greek Isles. She also earned a master's degree at age 75, documenting the Swedish immigrant (and her own family's) experience in Minnesota. She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Eugene Avery (d: 2001); siblings Joan Peterson and Mike Grant; parents Myron and Myrtle Grant; grand-nephew Brandon Cheney; daughter-in-law Kris Avery, grandson Nicholas Avery; great grandson Jaxon Avery; son-in-law Dennis Ryan and close friend and traveling companion Clifford Tice of Sturgeon Bay, WI. Survived by daughters Susan Ryan, Cathlin Mahal (Kevin) and Anne Avery (Doug Smith); sons James Avery (Jeanne') and William Avery (Raluca); grandchildren Scott Ryan (Crista); Steve Ryan (Karin); Elizabeth Drake (Jeremy); Lucas and Cherice Mahal; Zachary Avery (Misty) and Kayla Avery; William, Edward and Margaret Smith; Isabel, James and Michael Avery; great grandchildren Samuel and Peter Ryan; Chelsea and Greta Ryan, Lexi and Ashlynn Avery; Theo and Kendrick Drake; sister-in-law Bunny Grant; beloved nieces and nephews and their families, and other extended family members including Jude Burgoyne; Josef, Annmarie and Stefan Hines; and Michael Mooney (Marja) of Asheville, NC.
