Justine Kay (Ebert) Gould was born into the world on October 20, 1931, in Columbia, IL, the first-born of Justin and Irene (Schmid) Ebert. Justin must have had some premonition that there would be no boys in the family, so he named the oldest girl after himself and she became his farm hand, a position she relished. She loved being outside and left the household chores to her mother and younger sisters, with one notable exception - Food. Justine was a spectacular cook all the way down to the individual ingredients- she cured bacon, rendered lard, picked the mushrooms, gathered the eggs, grew all the fruits and vegetables and cut up all the cuts of meat from various livestock they raised, and made meals that passed comparison. She was a voracious reader and a lover of words. There are over 500,000 words in the English language, I don't remember ever stumping her on one. She loved them- she loved to read them, learn them, pronounce and use them whenever she could. She was extremely bright and back when they recorded such things, had the highest 8th grade test score in the county. She then graduated from the University of Illinois with a 4.95 grade point average, an invitation to join MENSA, and a disdain for talking about any of it. She did not like show-offs and would disapprove greatly of the above few sentences. She spun wool, loomed rugs, sewed clothing, canned and preserved (literally) tons of food, birthed lambs, slaughtered chickens, made cheese, and loved her life. She and her husband Bill lived near Maple Grove, MN for many years and had three children, Ed, Vicki and Jeff who she was quietly proud of (read above) and 18 grandchildren who got the same quiet pride and many more greatgrandchildren that she never really got to know. Sadly, in a twist of cruel irony, Justine's wonderful mind was claimed by Alzheimer's Disease about 15 years ago, a gradual and truly sad end to such a wonderfully, bright, inquisitive, curious and passionate life full of books to read, new things to do and learn and make and enjoy. The ending years of her life, however cannot extinguish the stories and memories of the life she led. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Bill whom she married on June 7, 1952; her children, Ed (Theresa) Gould of Zimmerman, MN, Vicki (Richard) Syverson of Benson, MN and Jeff (Libby) Gould of Sioux Falls SD; and a sister Irene Ebert of Columbia, IL. May God continue to bless her memory. Please send condolences to Bill Gould, 287 Minnesota Hwy 29 N, Benson, MN 56215.
