Gladys Mae (Ornberg) Malone

Malone, Gladys Mae Ornberg Age 98 of Golden Valley, MN passed away November 5, 2019. Gladys was born 1/28/21 to Clara and Johan Ornberg in Harwood, ND. Her mother died when she was four and her father died when she was eleven. Her aunts took her in temporarily, but it was during the Depression and she didn't want to burden them. Gladys was on her own at age 14 and worked as a live-in nanny for her room and board. She graduated from North High School in Minneapolis in 1938. Gladys met her bright, funny, talented Irish guy, Donald Thomas Malone, and they got married on June 20th, 1941. They had five daughters and one son. Gladys was a stay-at-home mom and they raised their family in Golden Valley. She instilled in her children the importance of education, family and faith. Gladys was a member of Valley Community Presbyterian Church for 64 years. She volunteered in church, Noble Elementary School PTA, and was a Girl Scout leader for many years. When her youngest child was in school, Gladys went to work in advertising for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. She was employed there for sixteen years. After retirement, Gladys and Don spent their winters in Fort Myers, FL. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband Don; daughter Jane; and sister Mildred Ornberg Kadlec. She is survived by daughters Deanna Joplin, Lynda Jordan (Doug Bryant), Patty Houston (Jerry), Nancy Jepsen (Brian), and son Jim Malone (Becky); grandchildren Sharon, Tim, Erin, Katie, Ryan, Justin, Charlie, Molly and Derrick; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her love lives on in all of us. Private interment at Fort Snelling, followed by a Celebration of Life on Monday, November 18 at Pool & Yacht Club in Lilydale, MN from 11-1pm. Memorials preferred to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
