Wiebe, Donald Leon Retired Captain U of M Police Department Donald L. Wiebe, 86 of Minneapolis passed away peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2019. He battled strong to survive the medical system and continued to stand and walk while being told not to do so (imagine that). Until the end he remained relentless in his efforts to build strength and walk tall. He was a 32 year Veteran of the "Old Guard" with the University of Minnesota Police Department from 1957 to 1989. In 1982, he founded On Guard Security and remained its President throughout his retirement. He was a hunter extraordinaire, fisherman and experienced woodsman (some might say woodsy). Don was reknowned for his marksmanship throughout Minnesota often taking trophies at Police/State Patrol tournaments. He improved all that he touched (even if that meant tearing it apart to do so). He tirelessly served his community as former President of Suburban Law Enforcement Association, Head of Physical Security at the University of Minnesota, President of the Ottawa Historians for many years overseeing the rebuilding and refurbishing of the historical Ottawa Church, a Life Member of NRA, Member of the Pioneer Power Association in Le Sueur, Board member of the Police and Peace Officers Shooting League for Minnesota. He was also a prolific philanthropist supporting Wounded Warriors, Shriner's Hospitals, Heritage Foundation and a staunch supporter of all patriotic causes. As a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, generous friend and selfless servant Donald is survived by: Loving wife of 70 years Carol; children Stephanie Wiebe, Theresa Wiebe, Caralyn (Scott) Anderson and Charles Wiebe; grandchildren Maxfield Anderson (fiance Amanda) and Adam Anderson; brother Harry (Georgia) Wiebe; brother-in-law David Duray. Services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at "high noon" at Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis. A reception will immediately follow at the Garden Pavilion. Please bring your Don Wiebe stories and anecdotes to share as we celebrate how thankful we are for his Life! Anyone who wishes to contribute to the: Don Wiebe Marksmanship Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 67, Le Sueur, MN 56058 which will be carefully administered ("No flim flam" as Don would say) to support youth champions in Minnesota. The family would like to extend our deepest Gratitude for the caregivers who sincerely contributed to make his Life better. His Mantra: "You can't take life too seriously as none of us get out alive anyway!" Washburn-McReavy.com Edina Chapel 952-920-3996
