A 17-year-old Minneapolis boy suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend in south Minneapolis last month was charged Friday with second-degree murder, a week after his arrest in Missouri.

Ahmed Abdirahim Abdi is charged in the April 11 slaying of 21-year-old Ayan Abdi Abdulahi at a duplex in the 2400 block of Portland Avenue. Police responding to the scene about 2:15 p.m. that day found Abdulahi unresponsive in Abdi's bedroom, according to the criminal complaint.

The Hennepin County medical examiner said she was shot in the head.

A relative who also lived in the first-floor home reported the shooting after hearing a gunshot in Abdi's room, then seeing Abdi run out the back door, police said.

An investigation led to Abdi's arrest on April 24 in Kansas City, where he was staying with relatives.

Community leaders and a person familiar with the investigation believe the bloodshed stemmed from a domestic dispute.

The homicide was the city's seventh this year.
