Rioters tore through parts of Minneapolis on August 26, shattering the windows of dozens of businesses and setting fire to at least four more in response to a false rumor that a man who killed himself had been shot by police.

Around 7:40 p.m. that night, tensions escalated in downtown Minneapolis between police and a crowd surrounding the scene where a 38-year-old man fatally shot himself near Nicollet Mall and 8th Street. Some began smashing in windows of nearby storefronts as rioting spread along a half-mile stretch of Nicollet Mall just northeast of Loring Park and nearby West Grant Street.

Brit's Pub, at 11th and Nicollet, was set on fire, as were three other businesses at least a few miles away, including Tires Plus on West Lake Street, China Wok on 27th Avenue, and Walgreens at 43rd and South Chicago Avenue.

The rioting stretched from 5th to 12th streets along Nicollet Mall, and spread as far as a gas station and liquor store near Loring Park. Some businesses, like Target, had planned to reopen as soon as Thursday afternoon.

These new reports of damage come less than three months after more than 1,500 locations were hit in the Twin Cities.
